"Alex Rider" (Barely) Opens

My nephew has been eagerly anticipating the opening of the British teen spy flick "Alex Rider: Operation Stormbreaker," which came out Friday. The buzz on this movie was so low that its performance wasn't mentioned in a single weekend movie roundup. Thouhg based on a best-selling series of books that every boy under 14 is familiar with, the movie did so-so in the UK and couldn't get arrested here. I assumed it would be a wide-release but couldn't find where else it was playing other than New York. Not in my nephew's home town of Birminham, Alabama but not even -- apparently -- Atlanta. Was it just opened in NYC and LA? How did it do? Finally, today Variety released its full box office chart (which I can't link to for non-subscribers) and there's "Alex Rider." It opened on 221 screens and grossed $400,000 for a miserable per screen average of $974. Oh dear.
