"PIrates" DVD Brings In Gold
Aaarrrghhhh. (No, I can't resist.) I ge very frustrated writing about DVD sales because the info -- unlike movie grosses -- is treated like a state secret. Oh and unless a major studio WANTS to release sales figures, we're left in the dark about how DVDs are selling. This is ridiculous in the age of SoundScan, when we know exactly who many albums have been sold at major retailers and there are even fewer small outlets for DVD sales. But that's the way it is. Anyway, Disney is willing to tell us that "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" has sold almost 5 million copies on its first day and hopes to beat the 11 million copies of "Pirates 1" sold in its first week. If the DVD sells out the 20 million copies they shipped, that would be (I'm very roughly estimating) $340 million from US sales alone.
