I'll never understand why Disney didn't do a bigscreen sequel to its animated "Tarzan," one of their best films of the last 20 years. Well, Warner Bros. is taking another stab at a live action franchise, with Guillermo Del Toro (whose "Pan's Labyrinth" is one of the best movies of the year) attached to direct. John Patrick Shanley is going to write and direct a feature version of his marvelous play "Doubt." That's going to be tricky to adapt. And who knew they were making a new Nancy Drew movie? Emma Roberts -- neice to Julia -- stars in a new version coming out next summer. Will they work? Here's what to look for. On "Doubt," they say simply that no stars are attached, but frankly it's unthinkable without Cherry Jones in the lead. If she doesn't get the part, they're definitely off the rails. And "Tarzan" and "Nancy Drew" will be a lot more promising if they're period pieces.
NOTE: Just saw (most of) the "Nancy Drew" trailer. It's contemporary and doesn't look promising.
