Does that make it a winner? "Shark" had a much bigger lead-in from "CSI" and lost about 9 million viewers. "ER" had the flailing "30 Rock" as a lead-in (don't grow enamored of that show) and gained 5 million viewers. Sure, with a better lead-in, "ER" might still win. But a loss is a loss and shows talk of "ER" being wildly revitalized was an overstatement. It can still perform, but it's getting beaten week after week by freshman series "Shark," just like "Lost" was getting beaten by "Criminal Minds" until it retreated to 10 p.m. In the same timeslot, "Men In Trees" is showing positive signs of life.
