Major Networks Discover Saturday Night

ABC has had such success airing college football on Saturday nights - a night all three major networks had abandoned to reruns -- that they're thinking of airing basketball on the night. Imagine that: original programming SEVEN nights a week. That's pretty bold. What drove me nuts was this comment from a tallking head:
“Up until this season, no one has come up with an answer to how to successfully program Saturday nights,” Muszynski said. “Event sports programming could be a way of solving that problem.”
No one ever knew how to successfully program Saturday nights? Right, except for the four decades when the networks DID successfully program Saturday nights with obscure little shows like All In The Family, MASH, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Bob Newhart Show, The Carol Burnett Show, Gunsmoke (the biggest TV hit of all time), Perry Mason, The Lawrence Welk Show, Flipper, Get Smart, My Three Sons, Mission: Impossible, Adam 12, Emergency, The Love Boat, Fantasy Island, TJ Hooker, Golden Girls, Amen, The Commish, Sisters, Walker Texas Ranger, Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman, and the show that will still be running long after we're all gone: Cops.
