Wonderfully Unlovable Shelley Winters Is Dead

Two-time Oscar winner Shelley Winters died today at 83 (or 85, depending). Many movie stars happily play ugly, even evil characters: Charles Laughton as Quasimodo, Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter, Boris Karloff as the Monster in "Frankenstein." But all of those creations are memorable, compelling, and magnetic, if not downright lovable.

No one ever played real, believable characters who were quite so annoying, tiresome and hateful as Winters. (Only Bette Davis comes close but even her most monstrous creations were so strong you had to admire and respect them.) But Winters was never afraid to sacrifice the audience's sympathy for a good story. Check out "Lolita" and "A Place in the Sun" for two of her best performances.
