Mel, Meet Leni

The UK press has been more captivated by Mel Gibson's Apocalypto than US critics. The Guardian reviewer has the most fun with this. He wonders, wrongly, if the movie had been put into Cannes under a pseudonym whether it might have been hailed as brilliant. (No, but it would have done well in a midnight slot with people saying the director showed promise with action scenes.) But to top it off, he compares Gibson (quite appropriately) to Werner Herzog and...wait for it.. good ole Leni Riefenstahl. The comparison is amusing, but Gibson doesn't have 1/100th of her talent. Few directors do.
