Mamma Mia! "Phantom" Sets Record

Tonight, "The Phantom of the Opera" becomes the longest-running show in Broadway history with performance number 7,468, supplanting Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Cats," of course, which supplanted "A Chorus Line" and so on. You can't even pretend another show will challenge such a record, but the only one currently running with the slightest prayer is probably "Mamma Mia!"

Two memories come to mind. First, taking my sister Leslie to "Phantom" for her birthday (which is on October 31st). We had great seats right under the chandelier and the darn thing took so long to fall you might have thought it was just gliding politely out of the way instead of hurtling towards an unsuspecting but well-heeled crowd.

Second, contributor biboy now focuses on highbrow opera, but he had a real weakness for this show in college, often playing "The Music of the Night" late at night. Sure, Michael Crawford had a lovely tone to his voice, but I wonder if biboy is proud, amused or ashamed of that memory.
