Who's Going To Come Out Today?

Two weeks ago today, TR Knight of "Grey's Anatomy" (he plays the lovable O'Malley) came out after a co-star referred to him derogatorily as a faggot during a fight with Patrick Dempsey. (Isaiah Washington hadn't named Knight but the slur sparked webgossip about who he meant.) The response was positive, polite and by and large ho-hum. Keep in mind, Knight is a romantic lead on one of the top dramas on television. I thought, you know, people are so blase about this, I hope it encourages other stars to come out. And then one week ago, for no apparent reason whatsover, Neil Patrick Harris of "How I Met Your Mother" came out. (Both did it via People.com.) Harris plays an hilarious womanizer named Barney on the show, a spin on his self-mocking cameo in the rather sweet dumb comedy "Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle." Yep, Doogie Howser is gay. Again, everyone said, 'That's nice' and went on with their lives. Have these actors hurt their careers? I don't think so and it's especially notable they both came out at a potential career high point. They also both play strongly heterosexual roles. No, neither is an action movie star leading man -- that'll be the last wall to fall. But the casual acceptance -- even indifference -- to the news by the media and America at large should give everyone heart. Hey, this could become a weekly event, as far as I'm concerned. Now who's gonna come out today? The closest we've come so far is a chat between Elton John and Jake Shears of Scissor Sisters and I'm pretty sure everyone knew about them.
