I thought Meryl Streep was having a career year and indeed she is: "Prairie Home Companion," "The Ant Bully," Oscar talk for "The Devil Wears Prada" (she'll be up for another Oscar next year when she gets the juicy role of Martha Mitchell in "Dirty Tricks") and to top it off "Mother Courage" in Central Park with audiences lining up overnight for tickets.
But Helen Mirren is having a career year as well. She just won the Emmy for the HBO miniseries "Elizabeth I," she is earning raves in Venice for playing Elizabeth II in "The Queen" and in the fall she returns to Jane Tennison in a new "Prime Suspect." (We'll just forget about her playing Cuba Gooding Jr.'s lover in "Shadowboxer.") Unless Streep reconsiders and puts her "Prada" performance in the Best Supporting Actress category where it belongs, they'll be facing off at next year's Oscars. Here are reviews of "The Queen" from Hollywood Reporter and Variety.
