David Cronenberg Will Direct Opera Based On "The Fly"
One of David Cronenberg's best films -- "The Fly" -- will be an opera with a score by composer Howard Shore (who did the film) and a libretto by David Henry Hwang. It premieres in Paris in July of 2008 and here in the US in September of 2008 in Los Angeles. Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis were at their peaks of creativity and it is still a remarkably moving and unexpectedly good film. But an opera? It seems so crazy and odd a choice that you can't help thinking it might just work. Certainly the material is hyper-dramatic and intense enough to justify an aria or two.
