Next gen DVD Makers Courting Porn Industry

I love this story. In the battle to replace DVDs with Blu Ray DVDs or HD-DVDs, the porn industry is becoming a player. Everyone is courting them because as you may know, porn has been at the forefront of every technology. VHS revolutionized porn and they also led the way in cable channels, video on demand, CD-ROMs, DVDs and now the next generation of DVDs. Right now, BluRay has the lead in sales, but HD-DVD players may get cheaper quicker and they're making a MUCH bigger effort to lure the porn industry. It won't be decisive since DVD is already established, but letting HD-DVD own the adult film business would be a big mistake for Blu-Ray. Besides, my brother Chris told me HD-DVD is going to win anyway. Why? Because Blu-Ray is a dumb name and he doesn't know what it means. HD-DVD -- he gets that right away. He knows high-definitio and he knows DVD so he knows this must be a really top-notch DVD. Something as simple as that could in fact decide the winner. That and "Debbie Does Dallas."

I haven't picked a side yet, but I actually think Blu-Ray is a cooler name. HD-DVD sounds kind of clunky to me. HD is fine, and DVD is fine, but when you add them together it's too many D's. So I score that one in favor of Blu-Ray.

#2 in their favor is the PS3. Not a huge factor, but gets them in with the very same people that buy a lot of movies.

#3 in their favor is the fact that Sony has such a large library of movies. Do you know if HD-DVD is backed by any studios?

#4 in their favor...I believe they are $5 cheaper.

But I think if HD-DVD's are superior in quality (and since I haven't seen either of them I have no opinion), then there is no reason they can't overcome reasons #1 through 4 (unlike Beta).

1. I hadn't taken a stance, but I have to admit my brother's argument about the name makes sense to me. I like Ds, by the way, so the more the merrier. I'd call it HD-DVDDDDDDD.

2. PS3 -- everyone thinks this is a big deal, but I think it's marginal at best and not a factor really.

3. One studio doesn't matter. But Blu-Ray is backed by Sony, MGM (which is catalog owned by Sony), Disney and Fox. HD-DVD is backed by Universal. Paramount and Warner bros. release titles in both formats.

4. Blu-Ray has much higher storage capacity (25 GB versus 15 GB) but is more expensive to manufacture and trickier.

Right now, Blu-Ray has more momentum, which is why they feel safe to snub porn, which may not be such a bright idea business-wise.
