Star of "The Red Shoes" Is Dead At 80

Actress Moira Shearer is dead. Martin Scorsese will say I'm a fool, but I always found The Red Shoes quite dated, if gorgeous. I much prefer the Powell-Pressburger classic A Matter Of Life and Death (not to mention Peeping Tom, The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp and Black Narcissus).

Movies can be of their time but timeless. Casablanca is clearly made under the shadow of war (I would kill to see it in the theater in 1942 in England and hear the audience reaction to the scene where they sing the French National Anthem). Maybe dated isn't the word I was looking for. (I was trying to be polite since she'd just died.) Hokey, silly, ludicrous? I think only a 12 year old girl could be won over by The Red Shoes. While there are many, many movies far older that still ring true. If you're thinking of kids -- Chaplin springs to mind. I'm sure some of my movie picks will be dated (with brokeback the one most threatened), I guess. But great movies do age well and I don't think Red Shoes has.
