Surfing Through "American Idol"

Another entertaining episode and, finally, some male contestants. Jason, an embalmer, got giggles for singing Josh Groban's "You Raise Me Up." He impressed the judges more than he impressed me, but at least he could be competitive later on. Ditto RJ Norman, who did okay with one of my favorite songs "Ain't No Sunshine" and 16 year old William, who did a karaoke-worthy cover of "Ain't To Proud To Beg." (He should have stopped before that high note.) But they're all appealing and a nice change from the wave of major female talent.

Finally, are the judges meaner? Tessie is a good example of the judges trying to be nice. But the producers edited the scene to make it crueler than necessary. Tessie is a big, bulky girl (who can't sing a lick) and the producers showed her coming into the room and added mean-spirited thumping sounds as she strode to her mark. The judges went out of their way to be nice to her. But when she left, Simon described her as looking like a potato sack -- Paula walked away on that comment. Take out the nasty sound effects and the comment Simon made after the girl left (which didn't need to be shown on national TV) and you've got a good example of them being nice. Instead, it was perhaps the most gratuitous moment of meanness so far this year.
