Surfing Through "Gilmore Girls"

A mixed bag as always these days on last night's "Gilmore Girls." Why did Paris have to melt down as editor of the Yale newspaper? I hate when they treat these characters as punchlines. It would have been more interesting -- and realistic -- if the staff at the Yale newspaper discovered Paris's constant editing, demands for better work and imperious style were actually making the paper better. ("You're going to get a job with that clip," snaps Paris as a writer realizes how good their story has come out.)

But the big news was a crazy, experimental last ten minutes that looked as if it were directed by John Cassavetes. A Friday night dinner showdown between the grandparents, Rory and Lorelai suddenly exploded into handheld cameras, swooshing pans, radical mood swings (fighting to laughing to confessing) and every confrontation followed by a revelation. It was wacky and unprecedented and a little bizarre, but by God it was fun.
