Two new movies open wide this weekend: the romantic comedy Something New (which looks diverting) and When A Stranger Calls, a remake of the teen babysitter jolter from the 70s that wasn't screened for critics. But the big excitment is the expansion of Oscar hopefuls. Brokeback got a big mid-week jump from its nominations and expands to 2000 screens. Despite no Best Picture nod, Walk The Line got a boost too and expands to 1500 screens. (Munich got that slot but its box office dropped anyway.) Capote jumps from 325 screens to 1200 and Good Night and Good Luck from 125 to 909. And therein lies a story I'll discuss shortly: why everyone is wrong about this year's Oscars broadcast.
NOTE: Box Office Prophets says Something New will do about $8.7 mil. I think they're underestimating this movie greatly, especially since it's the only film of its sort out there and the first romantic comedy/drama in ages. It will do much better than tht.
