SAG and Sundance

The SAG Awards were last night and Sundance announced winners as well. It seems inconceivable to me that the pleasant "Little Miss Sunshine" could win Best Picture, but it's certainly more likely. But frankly, if it ain't the Oscars or the Tonys or the Emmys or the Grammys, I just don't care.

Does the fact that SAG members make up the largest voting block of the Academy mean that Little Miss Sunshine is now a serious contender for Best Picture? I had previously thought it was 4th or 5th on the totem pole, but where do you see it at this point?

This is a VERY wide open race. Everyone will point to Crash winning SAG and Oscar last year and this as telling. But people looking for "patterns" have to remember that every year is unique. I think The Departed, The Queen and Little Miss Sunshine are the three movies battling it out, with Babel far in the back and Letters From Iwo Jima even more unlikely. My pick to win depends on what hour you ask me. At 6:26 p.m. I'd say The departed for picture and director. That'll change.

Oh and yes, actors being the biggest single block is always good to remember. Hence Peter O'Toole coming up on the outside trying to spoil Forest Whitaker's run -- O'Toole plays an actor and actors love actors playing actors.
